Katy Herzog – Munich Re – CLU®, Certified FALU AVP Accelerated Underwriting
Katy is Assistant Vice President, Accelerated Underwriting Services at Munich Re Life US. She works directly with carrier clients to develop and optimize their accelerated underwriting programs, rules, and practices. She collaborates with various disciplines to bring process enhancements to clients, including traditional and innovative underwriting tools. Prior to joining Munich Re, she led underwriting innovation with a focus on new underwriting tools and techniques at Securian Financial. She also served as a production underwriter for 12 years. She is a current AHOU Conference Program Committee member and was an ALU 301 Exam contributor. She holds the certified FALU and CLU designations. Katy lives in a St. Paul, MN suburb with her husband, their two delightful daughters, and a spirited Mini Bernedoodle.
Wayne Lilyestrom, PhD. Medical Director at Grail, LLC
Dr. Lilyestrom received his PhD in 2006 from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Since 2012, Dr. Lilyestrom has worked in Medical Affairs department’s at several different biotech companies where he has focused his efforts in advancing the science of treating and curing cancers through clinical studies, philanthropic research grants and advancing medical education. Dr. Lilyestrom joined Grail in 2019, and is currently a Medical Director within the department of Medical Affairs. He has helped support the use of Grail’s Multi-cancer Early Detection Screen (MCED), Galleri, across the United States. His current focus includes educating on the benefits of multi-cancer screening, the potential to stage-shift cancers across entire populations and novel research efforts in the area of circulating tumor DNA detection.
Presentation title: Multi-cancer early detection through the use of a single blood based cancer screen
This presentation will provide an overview of a novel cell-free DNA based multi-cancer screen that detects both the general biology of cancer as well as the unique cancer signal of origin which helps localize the disease. Topics will include, how the technology was developed, who is appropriate to screen, ongoing research and the potential impact that multi-cancer screening can have on cancer related mortality.

Al is a principle and consulting actuary with Milliman’s Buffalo Grove / Chicago office. He joined the firm in 2009. Al’s primary responsibilities involve industry experience studies and mortality, longevity, and underwriting issues. Al’s expertise includes traditional products, simplified issue,
final expense, older age, and preferred.
Al also has expertise on COVID-19 and leads the Milliman COVID-19 Claims Survey. Al has helped several InsurTech companies enter the life insurance market.
Presentation: The Latest on COVID-19 and Mortality
COVID-19 has affected all of us personally and professionally. This presentation will provide you with the latest statistics on COVID-19 from both a population and life insurance company perspective. Using this data, a couple of the questions that will be answered include: What causes of death are increasing and decreasing? What should you be concerned about as an underwriter? The presentation will also provide a summary of the findings from different studies on Long COVID. Finally, results from several recent related SOA surveys will be shared as well as a teaser on a current survey that is currently ongoing.
